What is it?

The Photo Rally is kind of like a cross between a scavenger hunt and a road rally -- in the allotted time, teams compete to provide the best photos of offbeat subjects that we send you out to find. In the end, the photos are viewed, judged, and hilarity ensues. For those of you who were around for last year, the Photo Rally was a great success. However, we know that it can be better. We've improved the rally to give you more time, more things to search for, and more rewards. Gather up your photo rally comrades and keep your camera ready, because there's a lot more in store for you this quarter.

I want to play! What do I need to do?

To ensure a decent turnout and to keep things running as smoothly as possible, each team must register prior to the photo rally. This is to make sure that we have an accurate head count of those wishing to participate, and also to avoid the confusion we had last year where some teams arrived without a camera and/or laptop. To properly register your team for the photo rally, send an email to photo.rally@gmail.com containing the name of your team, the names of your team captain and all members, and confirmation that your team will have a digital camera, a laptop to display your photos, and the means to transfer the pictures from the former to the latter. Listen. We know this is going to be kind of weird, but we're charging a minor team registration fee this time around. Each team needs to pony up a 5 dollar entry fee. Why, you ask? Well, for one thing, we want to be able to reward your hard work, and all of the entrance fee money is going towards a prize worthy of the photo rally. We'd like to stress that all the money is solely for prizes, and not for our alcohol slush fund. Besides, 5 dollars per team? That's like a buck and a quarter per person. You can probably scrounge up your share of the fee under the couch, you know?

I just looked at the times. Is this going to take all day?

No. No no no no no. We are distributing the lists at the morning meeting. We are collecting photos at the evening Scoring Ceremony. How you use the time in between events is up to you. We feel that this is more flexible than the previous, 90 minute event. If you have things to do in the middle of the day, such as homework, sports, drinking, etc, you still have time to do that and participate in the rally. Since your teams are organized beforehand, you have the opportunity to plan which people are taking photos while others aren't. All we ask of you is to have your captain come to the morning meeting, and have your entire team (if possible) make it to the scoring ceremony. The rest of the day is your playground.

Your Team

Your photo rally team consists of:

• A group of four to five enthusiastic, fun-loving, photo rallyin' comrades who may or may not prefer soft jazz and moonlit walks on the beach.
• A Photographic Commander, one of your teammates chosen to serve as both Captain of the team and as a representative for the morning meeting.
• A team name which easily lets other participants know how witty and clever you are.
• Team Mojo. Team Mojo is an object of some sort serving as your logo or mascot. Team Mojo should be present in any pictures where there may be suspicion of forgery, to show that the photo was taken during the rally and not lifted straight outta the internets. Team Mojo should be an easily portable object, as we will want to see it present at both the morning meeting and the scoring ceremony. Team Mojo should be unique. Team Mojo should //also// be awesome, kind of like a skeleton dressed up with a leather jacket and a fedora named "Indiana Bones" or a giant heraldic shield, proudly glistening in the sun with your mighty colors.
• Laptop and digital camera. Each team needs to come up with a digital camera to take pictures and a laptop to display them. Between the four of you, this shouldn't be too difficult. Let us know if it is. You will also need a way to get the pictures from the camera to the laptop. We can probably help with that too if you're having issues.

The List

Lists will be distributed to the Photographic Commanders at the morning meeting. We will only be distributing one paper copy of the list per team. It will not be available online until after the photo rally, so be sure that your team attends the meeting.

Photo Guidelines

• While you are free to take as many pictures as you like, we are only allowing one photo submission per objective. If you have several photos you feel are totally awesome, tough nuggets. Pick your greatest photo and hope for the best.
• Each objective requires its own separate, unique entry. We know that there are some creative ways to use one photograph to cover a multitude of objectives. Now, we all like creativity, but we certainly don't like laziness. Have some fun and see what different photos you can come up with.
• Pictures submitted must be able to stand on their own merits. If you have to explain why your photo successfully completes the objective, chances are that it doesn't. Of course, there are exceptions - we judges are one step ahead of the game, but are also probably three sheets to the wind, and something may slip over our heads. In that case, please, by all means, clarify for us. However, if you're banking on a technicality, or trying to stretch out an inside joke just a little too far, don't count on a return on your investment.
• Pictures must be authentic. Taking pictures of pictures will get you zero points. We all know about Google Images, so pictures from the web will not only get you zero points, but will also get you laughed at. Photoshop? Don't even try it. We'll bust your team so hard with negative points that you'll wish we didn't bust you so hard. When you're out in the field and you find a photo opportunity that will give us reason to doubt its authenticity, make sure you present either a teammate or your Team Mojo in the shot to show that yes, you really were there. We would hate to throw out some of your best work because it looked too good to be true. Just make it easy on us, ok?
• Quality over quantity. Works every time.

Morning meeting is at the Nautical Bean (11560 Los Osos Valley Road, corner of Madonna and LOVR). Scoring session is at the Steynberg Gallery, (1531 Monterey Street).

Judging

All judgements, point tabulations, and decisions are final. Judges reserve the right to...well, to do whatever the hell they want.
