It's back, and it's better than ever. Photo Rally 3 is on for Winter
quarter!
Anyone who's anyone saw that the second photo rally was even better than the
first one, but we know that it can be better still. We've been readily refining the rally to bring you the penultimate photography powerhouse you've come to know and love.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, the photo rally is pretty much a cross between a scavenger hunt and a road rally. Teams take off, digital cameras in hand, scouring the city and surrounding areas for certain objectives we deem worthy. Teams get a certain amount of time to take as many pictures as possible. At the end of the event, all of the pictures are viewed and judged, and hilarity ensues. Last quarter, the winning team took home the Golden Camera trophy, signifying their triumph over their fellow man. Now, the honor is back up for grabs, with a new list, new objectives, and a new system to help smooth over the rough edges of the last photo rally.
To ensure a decent turnout, we will be requiring teams to preregister with us before the event. This is to make sure that we have an accurate headcount of how many people are playing, which will in turn help us set up a scoring ceremony just as totally bitchin' as the one last time. To register your team of photographic combatants, send an email to (photo.rally@gmail.com). This email should contain your team name, the names of all people participating in your team, a phone contact for at least one person on the team, and confirmation that your team has a digital camera and a flash drive large enough to hold all of your photos. Please note that we are not requiring teams to have a laptop this time around! This should make things more covenient for everyone, especially us. Any changes to this information should be relayed via email before the morning meeting. Questions? Call Zach (530.219.2781) and/or Patrick (805.801.5418).
Unfortunately, yes. Prizes don't grow on trees, you know. Team registration fee is 2 dollars per person, which is required at the morning meeting to get your objective list. For those of you who need the extra clarity, that's 8 dollars for a four-person team, and 10 dollars for a five-person team.
We're glad you asked. While the photo rallies have been getting better and better, there's still room for improvement. Here's what we've done to make things better:
List Length - We've made this quarter's list a bit shorter than the previous one, while still giving you almost as much time. The idea here is that it will be possible for most teams to complete the entirety of the list. During the last rally, we saw teams with great entries get outscored by teams who got easy points simply by being the only team who completed the objective. While we commend the dedication of teams who managed to finish last year's massive list, we would like to shift the focus of the event towards quality over quantity. The shorter list will not only allow teams to submit a picture for each objective, but also allow them time to make sure the submission is a better one.
Scoring Ceremony - If you've been a veteran of both photo rallies, you know that this is the one time where all the planning and organizing falls to pieces. We're changing things around this year to help us keep the event going smoothly until the very end. This time, we are requiring all photos to be turned in one hour before the scoring ceremony is slated to take place. This will give you and your team some time to relax, chill out, eat some dinner, drink a fifth of vodka, or do whatever you need to do while we make sure our state of the art SCORE-O-MATIC 3000 system is up and running.
More Ranked Items - We're taking out most of the Free For All items and replacing them with ranked items. Again, this is to make the images more competitive, but still allow multiple teams to get points, cause everyone likes getting points. We'll still have a few Winner Take All items, but this time they won't be nearly as gamebreaking as last time. And yes, because you asked for it, Amazing Adjectives will return in all of its amazing awesomeness. We liked it too.
More Prizes! - Second and third place may be the first and second losers, but they're our favorite losers. More rewards equals more fun, right?
Your team should consist of:
Teams will receive the list at the morning meeting after having paid the team registration fee. Each team will receive one copy of the list. In addition, the list will only be available in paper format for the duration of the event! This means that at least one person from each team needs to make the meeting, although more are welcome. The list will only be available online after the event. Teams will not receive a pony. Ever.
We want to emphasize that while the rally will be going on all day, we do not expect anyone to commit their entire Saturday to the event. We distribute the lists in the morning, and we collect the photos in the evening. Between those times, it's up to you. If you have things to do in the middle of the day, Mr. or Mrs. Productive-pants, then go right ahead. You still have time to participate in the rally. Since your teams are organized beforehand, you can work it out amongst yourselves who can take pictures while others are being responsible yet boring adults. All we ask is that at least one representative makes the morning meeting, and that as many people as possible come to the scoring session. Seriously, bring your friends. It's fun.
Because we can.
