International Exchange Opportunities

This document contains links to International Exchange opportunities for Computer Science students and faculty at Cal Poly. Most of the information was collected by me in the summer and fall of 2002; the information on courses offered in English was collected by Unny Menon in December 2002, with occasional updates as I become aware of them.

International Exchange Programs at Cal Poly

The Web site of Cal Poly's International Programs Office has information about general exchange opportunities.

The College of Engineering Web site for international exchange opportunities is at http://ceng-iep.calpoly.edu/ .

A good collection of information about exchange programs in Germany is at http://www.internationale-kooperation.de/ ,but almost all of their information is in German.

Computer Science Opportunities

This section contains information specifically for Computer Science exchange opportunities. I've divided it into two parts, one with programs officially supported by Cal Poly, and the other with opportunities based on personal contacts that I have in various countries, mostly in Europe.

Cal Poly Exchange Programs

Cal Poly has had ongoing exchange agreements with a few universities for a while. The two mentioned below originated in Mechanical Engineering, and have been extended to the whole College of Engineering recently.

The Computer Science Program in Karlsruhe

Currently the FH-K offers the traditional German Diplom (FH) in Informatik, and a combination of Bachelor's and Master's degrees. The Diplom typically takes eight semesters, and includes two practical semesters. The Bachelor's degree can be obtained in six semesters, and is the basis for a three-semester Master's degree.

Courses in English in Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe University has an English website, which for most programs lists classes. For majors not listed we can e-mail their department office for details. The Karlsruhe Professors are willing to teach some classes in English if there is enough demand and concurrence by the German students in the class.

The Computer Science Program in Munich

Most students at FH-M pursue the Diplom (FH) in Informatik. In addition, a Bachelorıs degree in Wirtschaftsinformatik (Information Systems and Management) is offered, and a corresponding Masterıs is in preparation.

This web site lists the courses taught in English for 2002-3 http://www.fh-muenchen.de/home/fhm/englisch/. It may also be possible to make arrangements with individual professors.

Exchange Agreement between the States of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, and California, USA

There is a general agreement between the two states concerning the exchange of students. This may be of interest since it allows more flexibility with the balancing of the numbers of incoming and outgoing students across the whole state, instead of for individual universities. I have not been able to find an official description of this program on the Web, however. Please contact the International Exchange Programs office at Cal Poly, or at the university you're interested in. The main universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg are in Heidelberg, Freiburg, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Tuebingen, and Ulm. There are also several Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Technology).

Informal Contacts

For the places listed below, there is no formal exchange agreement with Cal Poly. It is still possible to do an exchange, but arrangements have to be made individually. This can actually sometimes be easier than going through the official, formal process, but it might also cause some problems.

University of Ulm, Germany

This university falls under the exchange agreement between the states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and California. In addition, I have good personal contacts from the time I worked there in the Computer Science department.

The Computer Science Program in Ulm

The Computer Science Department in Ulm offers the ³Diplom² in Informatik as the main degree, with some variations such as Medieninformatik (Multimedia in Computer Science), Wirtschaftsinformatik (Economics and Computer Science), and a planned program in Bioinformatik. A Bachelorıs and a Masterıs degree are offered as well.

Courses in English in Ulm

The University of Ulm has a Web site in English, which also lists some courses in English.
The University of Ulm offers a summer program where students take intensive German courses in the morning, and courses in various areas (taught in English) in the afternoon. The university has been offering the International Summer School for several years now. It is a six-week program, and it looks like the courses are suitable for academic credit. They consist of 48 lecture hours, and the students get grades based on their performance in the class, homework, exercises, and exams. I am not sure if this can be done through an exchange, you may have to pay for the program. Contact their International Programs Office for details.

University of Bremen, Germany

One of my former colleagues, Prof. Christian Freksa, is now at the University of Bremen. So far, three Cal Poly students did a summer internship with him, or groups collaborating on projects with him: Chris Newman in the summer of 2001 in Hamburg, Sachin Shah in the summer of 2002, when Prof. Freksa's group moved from Hamburg to Bremen, and Kevin McCullough in the summer of 2003.. All of these internships were part of an International Quality Network on Spatial Cognition. As far as I know, this particula program is over, but there may be opportunities available again for this summer. They also may have job openings, which could be a good opportunity to get a PhD degree while being paid to work on an interesting research project.

The Computer Science Program in Lausanne

The main program at EPFL is the Diplom en Informatique. EPFL recently also established Bachelorıs and Masterıs degrees. The main language at EPFL is French, but many courses are offered in English. This is for two reasons: Not all faculty members have a strong enough command of the French language, and many graduate students are from other countries as well.

The Computer Science Program in Milan

The main program at the moment is a five-year degree in Computer Science. However, a restructuring of such programs is on its way university-wide, with the goal of having two separate programs of three and two years respectively. There is a considerable interest with Computer Science students in international exchange programs. While the upcoming change may affect this interest somewhat, it is not considered critical. In addition to the regular CS program UM also offers a Masterıs as well as a PhD program. The Masterıs program takes 60 credit units, and typically lasts one year.

Courses in English in Milan

UM participates in the European SOCRATES exchange program, and has about 100 incoming and outgoing students per year. Practically all CS courses at UM are taught in Italian. Since there already is a sizable number of foreign students, mostly through the SOCRATES program, but also through other venues that attract foreign Ph.D. students, mechanisms are in place to accommodate students with deficiencies in the Italian language. The most common one seems to be an arrangement where the instructor of a particular course taught in Italian identifies the respective material in a textbook written in English, and evaluates the performance of the visiting student based on assignments delivered in English. Through this mechanism, students visiting for a year or longer usually acquire the ability to also follow courses in Italian.
