What’s the Job Market Like?

Computer Science, Software Engineering and Computer Engineering majors are and will be in GREAT demand!

Innovation is everywhere in computing, from games/interactive entertainment and mobile phones (i.e., iPhone, Android Platform development), to computational modeling and predictions, to robots, to social networking, to sustainability and beyond.

Computer Science and Software Engineering touches nearly every aspect of our lives. Clearly, computing is and will be changing the way society operates, interacts and evolves.

Be part of the excitement and get an outstanding education at the Computer Science department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Job Prospects, Media and Projections

The message, regarding off-shoring (or out-sourcing) of computing jobs, that is being often delivered by the national media is quite different from the reality of the job market.

The employment predictions from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), for 2006-2016 (published in November 2007), predict (almost) unlimited opportunities for students of computing. The BLS office is the most credible source for such information. Some highlights of the various reports at BLS include:

  • Of the nearly five million new "professional" jobs expected, one in six will be in computing.
  • The growth rate of 25.2% for computing employment is the largest of all the professional occupations, comparing against a national average of 10.4% and projections of 10.6% for engineering, 12.8% for life sciences, and 15.7% for physical sciences.
  • The prediction of more than one million total job openings [2006-2016] in computing (i.e., computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, and other computing specialties) is more than twice as large as the total for engineering, life sciences, and physical sciences combined.

The job prospects are fantastic!!!!!

In addition, the impact of Computer Science and Software Engineering will only continue to grow. A recent report by the 2020 Science Group concludes that computing and computer science will become fundamental to all sciences, particularly the natural sciences.

The progress of all fields of engineering and science do heavily depend not only on the achievements computer scientists/software engineers have already made, but more importantly on the upcoming innovations that you, in the computing fields, can contribute.
